Supporting Our Staff

​Uncertain times call for radical measures, and at Mackie Motors we are committed to doing what we can to protect our staff, customers and the communities we operate in, from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Following the guidance provided by the UK Government earlier this week, we have taken action to enable our staff who are able to, to work from home, particularly those with underlying health issues,” explained Kevin Mackie, Managing Director of Mackie Motors. “One such example is our Brechin Sales Administrator, Yvonne Somerville, who has worked for us for over 12 years”.

Yvonne, who lives in Brechin and was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal cancer in October 2016 and had to undergo an arduous 14 weeks of chemotherapy and 12 weeks of radiotherapy. “Yvonne being the amazing person she is, was often back at her desk the day after chemotherapy,” added Kevin.

“As soon as I told Kevin [Mackie] of my condition, he told me that whatever I needed it would not be a problem,” said Yvonne. “He even offered to provide transport and a driver for me to go for my treatment.”

“Unfortunately, my cancer came back, and I had to undergo two major surgeries to see if the tumour could be removed. Both were unsuccessful, as it is sitting on top of my main artery, so I now get immunotherapy every two weeks and scans every three months. Once again, Kevin has been extremely supportive, giving me all the time I need.”

“As the immunotherapy attacks the immune system, I am “at risk” to the current corona virus. Kevin is enabling me to work from home, to minimise my contact with others, which will reduce my risk of contagion. All of this support makes me feel extremely valued as an employee”.

“As you can imagine, the current situation is very stressful, but to come to work and be supported as I have been by everyone, is very comforting. We are a great team at Mackie’s and I know it sounds a bit corny, but you are made to feel like you are part of a family here. I will miss my colleagues and bosses during my time of isolation, but I am only a phone call away, and knowing that I am supported takes some of the pressure off.”

Earlier this week, Kevin announced a number of measures that we are taking as a business to help limit the spread of COVID-19. “As per the government guidelines, our team have been instructed to stay at home if they or members of their family are displaying symptoms of COVID-19,” added Kevin.
